isis2015: (✈ sun. head bitch in charge)

Title: Falling's Not the Problem
Rating: PG-13
Summary: They are both whoever they need to be, from moment to moment. And in this moment, with each other, they are probably as close to who they really are as they could ever be.
Disclaimer: I do not own Lost. At all. I wish but alas...
Author's Note: For the AU meme, for [livejournal.com profile] gemjam, who suggested: Sawyer/Sun, in which Sun is a con woman and Sawyer is her mark. Used for [livejournal.com profile] au100, prompt #050: joker.

"Out of curiosity," she begins, her voice low and sounding every bit as heavy as she feels. Her mind races as she lays exhausted and wrapped in incredibly scratchy sheets. She rolls over and looks at him, touches his face once more and feels the scratch of his stubble against her fingers. She can feel it in a few other places as well. "At what point did you figure it out?"

He chuckles and shrugs, the way he does when he thinks he's being very clever or evasive or smart or any number of things. He isn't that clever. It was recently, she knows, but she is curious when. She's always curious. "A while ago," he answers, glibly. She rolls her eyes.

"Liar," she replies.

He laughs even harder at that. "Well, you'd know."

"So would you," she says. "Tell me."

He rolls over to face her and smiles. This started out as a different game, she thinks as she looks at him. He found out before tonight, she knows that. He has known for some time, and yet here he is. At some point, he began his own game, instead of simply being a piece of hers.

"Few weeks ago," he finally answers. "You're good, Sun. I don't know if I've ever met a better liar than you. But you can't con a con. At least, not for long."

She examines him carefully, a slow smile making its way across her face. "So, why did you stay?" she questions further, her curiosity still not quite satisfied. "You have had plenty of chances to run. It isn't as if I'd know where to find you." She supposes she could, if she tried, but what would be the point of that? The game would be over.

He keeps grinning at her, self-assured as ever. She thinks many fools have been on the receiving end of that grin. And she would know that as well. She has parted many a fool from his money with a grin not unlike that one. But that's not what this was about, with Sawyer. It couldn't be.

"I wanted some time to figure it out," he tells her. "How you knew who I was. What I could possibly have that you'd want to take from me."

It's a good question. "And?" she asks.

He shrugs. "Nothing," he says. "I ain't got anything worth stealing, don't know anyone who does. And the more I thought about it, the more I realized maybe that was the point. If you knew who I was, you knew all the things I've done, and I started to think maybe that's what you wanted in the end."

"What is that?" she questions.

"To see if you could. I con for money, you con for ego. Simple as that."

She raises an eyebrow. "Simple as that?” she asks.

"'Course not," he answers. "But that's not part of the game, is it?"

Chuckling, she shakes her head. She wonders what it means, that this is who he turned out to be. A man that she was so curious about, for so long. It wasn't that she had idealized him – that would have done her no good – but she had spent a great deal of time wondering who he would turn out to be, or if he would just be a lie built upon many lies. The answer, it seems, is somewhere in between. They are both whoever they need to be, from moment to moment. And in this moment, with each other, they are probably as close to who they really are as they could ever be.

"No," she answers, and they fall asleep.

*

In the morning, she wakes up alone. She had expected that, but what she had not expected was the note that is sitting on top of the dresser near the motel room door.

How about a new game? Hide and seek, maybe?

She smiles and turns to get dressed.

I can't believe how ridiculously happy I was to see a Sun/Sawyer fic from you show up on my flist. I haven't read Lost fic in ages, and I would never step back up to the plate except for someone I really trusted with the characters ~ you didn't disappoint! Thank you so much for writing again. ♥

I still have a near-finished Sun/Sawyer 50 Sentences sitting in my WIP file.... :\

Aw, well thank you. :) I was really happy with this prompt because I love writing for this pairing and I haven't written Lost (or anything, really) in a very long time. So it was a nice refresher.

Aw, that's so sweet of you to say. ♥ Thank you so much.

I know how you feel. Apparently, I claimed Sun at [livejournal.com profile] au100 in 2007. :S

Really like what you've done here. I love this Sun, the confidence in her, how she does what she wants and gets what she wants. But this curiosity you give her, that rings so true to the character, how she wants to know about everything and how Sawyer is the thing she wants to know about now. Really great dynamic and I love the ending. Lovely work :)

If Sun was going to target someone like Sawyer, who really doesn't have anything but what he steals, it would be simply to see if she could. Which is screwed up in its own way, but having Sawyer not be the average mark but a con himself, who would be able to respect it on some level is what I thought was interesting. Sun conning him just because she wanted to see if she could rang true for me, in some way.

I'm glad you liked it, thank you! :)

WONDERFUL FIC! Brilliant characterizations, you totally got me with this. I loved their dynamics, it all worked so well.

(as a Jin/Sawyer shipper, though, I keep wondering how Jin fits into this world - intriguing thought).

Thank you! :) I'm glad you liked it.

I imagine Sun not being married, since she's a con women, which means she's always moving around. But I'm certain Jin is out there somewhere.
